The Sadler's Wells Sampled festival gives audiences a chance to experience the broad range of dance presented at affordable prices, with proms style standing tickets available for just £8, and all other tickets at £15. Following its London run, Sampled is on tour to The Lowry, Salford Quays and the Birmingham Hippodrome as part of The Movement, a new producing partnership with the venues.
Naomi, one of our Culture Club arts lovers, went to the festival on Saturday evening to review the event for us.
From contemporary to tap dance, Sampled brought together an exciting and eclectic mix of performances. Every dim of the lights delivered a new sense of anticipation and I now have a fresh appreciation for Tango. But the standout performance for me was the last of the night.
It was full immersion as masked figures appeared in the aisles beside us, visible only by flashlight they darted stealth like through the audience before congregating on stage.
It was a fusion of contemporary and breakdance, set against an atmospheric back drop of experimental techno, smoke machines and ingenious lighting. A brilliant end to a hugely enjoyable show.
